- As the precursor to disposable diapers, cloth diapers have been around for hundreds of years. In the 19th century, Europeans and Americans used linen, flannel or other cloth to diaper babies. During World War II, the diaper delivery service was born, which delivered clean cloth diapers and carted away soiled diapers. Most cloth diapers today are made from 100% cotton.

While some tropical cultures eschewed diapers all together due to warm climates, babies in colder climates wore diapers made from cloth, animal skins or other natural materials. In Elizabethan times, babies wore cloth diapers, but the diapers were changed every few days instead of on a daily basis.
The industrial revolution allowed for mass production of cloth diapers, and the convenience of cloth diapers increased when diaper delivery trucks began home delivery of diapers. Advances in hygiene in the 20th century also introduced the concept of boiling diapers to remove germs.
